‘Bliss' and ‘The Little Governess' are two short stories written by Katherine Mansfield at the time of World War 1 (1914-18). They were taken from the book ‘Bliss And Other Stories' and both depict young woman, one single and one married, who are victims of deception. Both characters in these two stories believe themselves to be safe. In Bliss Bertha accounts her happiness to the fact that she ‘doesn't have to worry about money'; she believes that being financially stable is happiness. She has ‘modern, thrilling friends' but she treats them as material possessions. In this way Katherine Mansfield presents happiness as superficial. Bertha believes that having a cosy family life, and being respected in social circles promotes a sense of security. She has the protection of a good husband, and a ‘satisfactory house and garden'. However, this is all self-deception, as it does not make her safe. On the contrary, her happiness blinds her, and makes her naive. She has no inkling of the fact that her husband is having an affair. In ‘The Little Governess' she feels safe with the old man, and with this security she feels ‘frightfully happy'. But her perception of happiness is different to what the reader sees. A flush licked the old man's cheeks; the old man's perception of her is very different to hers of him. Her happiness makes her vulnerable, and completely innocent of the old man's sexual agenda. This state of happiness that Bertha and The Little Governess enjoy is still real, even if it turns out to have blinded them both from reality. Katherine Mansfield suggests in both stories that innocence is bliss. Because they are ignorant of the truth does not make it necessarily unreal bliss. The fact that Bertha and the Little Governess discover that they have been horribly misled does not cancel out the happiness that they felt earlier. Bertha feels sexual excitement, which is stimulated by Miss Fulton's ‘touch of that cool arm'. Sexual feelings are uncorked and she describes it as a ‘fire of bliss'. This bliss that Bertha feels is strong, as she is innocent of what lies ahead of her. Therefore the deception does not take away the experience of the happiness, but destroy her innocence. But deception can ruin future happiness as with ‘The Little Governess'; she can never again feel happiness towards an old person, therefore with the benefit of experience she realizes her past happiness was false. So happiness for her does exist, but it is transient, it cannot last forever. At the time in which ‘Bliss and Other Stories' was published, there was no substantial schooling available to women, and they often lead sheltered lives. This meant that women were dangerously ignorant of the ways of the world. In the Little Governess, the lady at the Governess Bureau understands this and advises her to be a ‘woman of the world', and that it's ‘better to mistrust people'. This shows that young women were not educated about the ways in which a woman should act, and were thoroughly naive about people's thoughts and deeper intentions. In ‘Bliss' Bertha does not know what to do when she discovers that her husband is having an affair. ‘Oh what is going to happen now? ‘ she cries at the end of this powerful story. She feels paralysed. Although she describes her husband's smile as a ‘hideous grin', which implies something ugly and unchaste, she does feels reproach towards Harry for his infidelity. However she cannot express any feelings of anger, but only complete confusion and shock. She is ignorant of what to do in this situation, and she is fearful of causing a scandal. Bertha is not the one in control. Whilst she is perplexed and vulnerable, her husband is ‘extravagantly cool and collected'. Though in ‘Bliss' Bertha describes some things in her life as ‘material' or ‘superficial' happiness, (perfect house, friends husband etc. ) she also feels a deep seated, unexplained impulse of happiness at the core of her being. However, there are also constricting views in society that cause her to feel anger that she cannot express fully. She cannot stand still and ‘laugh at nothing- at nothing simply' for fear of being thought ‘drunk and disorderly' which dents her happiness slightly. She says: ‘how idiotic civilization is! ‘ and feels that it is like a straight jacket constricting her and preventing her from experiencing her happiness more fully. Bertha cannot really let go, and tries to conceal her bliss by resorting to a more conventional prose when talking to a servant. Later she ‘throws off her coat' revelling in her euphoria. Bertha's happiness seems to be completely uncontrollable, she describes it ‘like a fire' and has ‘fear for fanning it higher' which implies that it could lead to some kind of chaos. Bertha looks in the mirror and sees herself with ‘big dark eyes', which implies her sexual excitement, as her pupils expand. Katherine Mansfield promotes this sense of oppressed sexual feelings by describing fruit with ‘smooth' skin and ‘stained pink'; which gives a sense of erotic colours and enriched senses. Later she thinks she is ‘getting hysterical' which hints at Freudian ideas of ‘sexual oppression', which were popular at the time. Bertha has not recently enjoyed sex with her husband, and has probably never had pre-marital sex, which is another way in which Katherine Mansfield explores happiness, with ‘sex as bliss'. Bertha also obtains sensual pleasure from hugging her child. She describes physical happiness in her ‘exquisite toes' and her ‘neck as she bent forward'. Which illustrates Bertha's want of sensual pleasure. It is telling that when Bertha is hugging a simply mundane object like a cushion ‘passionately, passionately' it seems to enlarge the sexual and sensual happiness that she is feeling and ‘fans the fire in her bosom'. It is ironic that the first time Bertha Young desires her husband she cannot have him because of his affair with Pearl Fulton. This powerful force, which whispers ‘blind and smiling' in her ear, makes her more vulnerable as she desires him. She wonders if this feeling of bliss ‘had been leading up to' desiring her husband for the first time. Here Katherine Mansfield attributes some of the bliss Bertha is feeling to sex. Another story by Katherine Mansfield called ‘Pictures' depicts a single woman struggling to find a job to support her, and using happiness as a kind of professional tool for keeping reality at bay. Miss Ada Moss is constantly fantasising in order to keep hopelessness and desperation from taking over. Even though her life is falling apart she still answers people in her ‘cheerful way' in order not to draw attention to herself and to keep up appearances. Her greatest fear perhaps, is to be found out to be desperate, and the only way to prevent this is to pretend to everyone and to herself that nothing is wrong. Katherine Mansfield uses different styles of writing in her stories in order to convey a sense of happiness to the reader. She vividly describes ordinary things extra ordinarily like the recurring image of the pear tree so that they become metaphors. She also uses a simile to describe the pear tree's ‘flowering beauty' ‘like the flame of a candle'. She goes on to imply that the pear tree is becoming Bertha, by ‘dropping in silver flowers' from her ‘hair and hands'; which makes this happiness seem like ‘blissful treasure' dropping heavily from Bertha. The last line of ‘Bliss' again returns to this image of the pear tree, and describes it as ‘just as lovely as ever'; which seems a revelation, that with Pearl Fulton, Harry and Bertha's lives being entangled and confused, the tree still remains. Bertha's life is shattered but the tree is still there, the same as ever. Katherine Mansfield also uses slightly unexpected verbs like ‘the blush licked the old man's cheek' (from ‘The Little Governess'), in order to let the reader have a small insight into what the characters true agendas' really are. She also uses the Pathetic Fallacy to reflect the character's inner happiness, as in ‘The Little Governess' the ‘pink clouds in the sky'. Overall Katherine Mansfield represents happiness in a number of different ways. Through material happiness in ‘Bliss', to innocent and naive happiness in ‘the Little Governess'. Through fantasising happiness in ‘Pictures' to sexual or sensual oppression, and sex as happiness in ‘Bliss'. Katherine Mansfield portrays happiness as not false, but as transient. In all three of her stories the character's happiness is slowly or suddenly crushed by outside interference. Bertha and the Little Governess believe that their happiness will last forever. They are both naive, sadly mistaken, and have to learn that perfect happiness does not exist and cannot last forever.

THE BIRTH OF A HERO On June 19, 1861, the Mercado Family from the town of Calamba in the province of Laguna in the Philippines, happily greeted the birth of their newest member — a baby boy born as the seventh child to proud parents Francisco Rizal Mercado y Alejandro and Teodora Alonza y Quintos. They named the bouncing baby boy Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado. Being the seventh of a brood of eleven, Jose Rizal Mercado demonstrated an astounding intelligence and aptitude for learning at a very young age when he learned his letters from his mother and could read and write at the age of five. THE FIRST POEM At an early age of eight, Rizal wrote his first poem entitled â€Å"Sa Aking Mga Kababata†. Whenever people of a country truly love The language which by heav’n they were taught to use That country also surely liberty pursue As does the bird which soars to freer space above. For language is the final judge and referee Upon the people in the land where it holds sway; In truth our human race resembles in this way The other living beings born in liberty. Whoever knows not how to love his native tongue Is worse than any best or evil smelling fish. To make our language richer ought to be our wish The same as any mother loves to feed her young. Tagalog and the Latin language are the same And English and Castilian and the angels’ tongue; And God, whose watchful care o’er all is flung, Has given us His blessing in the speech we calim, Our mother tongue, like all the highest tht we know Had alphabet and letters of its very own; But these were lost — by furious waves were overthrown Like bancas in the stormy sea, long years ago This poem reveals Rizal’s nationalist sentiment. He proudly proclaimed that a people who love his native language will surely strive liberty and that Tagalog is equal to Latin, Spanish, English, and any other language. BEST STUDENT IN SCHOOL During his Bi SCHOLASTIC TRIUMPHS AT ATENEO DE MANILA First Year June 1872, being a newcomer and knowing little in Spanish, Rizal was placed at the bottom of the class. After the first week, he rapidly excelled and earned the title of the emperor. He was the brightest pupil of his class and he was awarded a religious picture as a prize. At the end of the year, he was placed second although his grades were still marked excellent. Second Year Having lost his class leadership on the previous year, he studied harder. Rizal received excellent grades and gold medal at the end of the year. Third Year June 1874. His grades remained excellent in all subject but he only won one medal – in Latin. Fourth Year Inspired by his Jesuit professor, he topped all his classmates in all subjects and won five medals at the end of the school year. Last Year in Ateneo On his last year, he excelled in all subject and recognized as the â€Å"Pride of Jesuits† for he is the most brilliant Atenean of his time. LITERARY WORKS WRITTEN IN ATENEO After the release of his mother, Rizal wrote his first poem during his days in Ateneo entitled â€Å"Mi Primera Inspiracion† which he dedicated to his mother on her birthday. FIRST INSPIRATION Why falls so rich a spray of fragrance from the bowers of the balmy flowers upon this festive day? Why from woods and vales do we hear sweet measures ringing that seem to be the singing of a choir of nightingales? Why in the grass below do birds start at the wind’s noises, unleashing their honeyed voices as they hop from bough to bough? Why should the spring that glows its crystalline murmur be tuning to the zephyr’s mellow crooning as among the flowers it flows? Why seems to me more endearing, more fair than on other days, the dawn’s enchanting face among red clouds appearing? The reason, dear mother, is they feast your day of bloom: the rose with its perfume, the bird with its harmonies. And the spring that rings with laughter upon this joyful day with its murmur seems to say: â€Å"Live happily ever after!† And from that spring in the grove now turn to hear the first note that from my lute I emote to the impulse of my love. Poems on Education Rizal had a very high regard for education. His poem proved that he valued education so much that may give the power of the country to survive from any forces in the struggles of societal freedom . LICEO ARTISTICO-LITERARIO On 1879, a society of literary men and artists held a literary contest. It offered a prize for the best poem by a native or a mestizo. Rizal who is still a student that time submitted his poem entitled â€Å"A La Juventud Filipina†. As the judges were impressed by his poem, they gave him the first prize which is a silver pen, feathered-shaped and decorated with ribbon. It was the first great poem written in Spanish by a Filipino. It expressed the nationalistic concept that the Filipinos and not the foreigners were the â€Å"Fair Hope of Fatherland†. Jose Rizal as a literary genius The literary aspect of Rizal’s works should commend itself to each of us as an inspiration to do our own duty. I think no man can read Rizal’s novels without feeling his powerful impulse of sympathy for and understanding of the people of this country. We can be moved not only by his profound reading of human nature, but we can also be inspired to emulate, if we may, the high level of talent for which his name will ever be famous in the history of literature. To the Filipino Youth Unfold, oh timid flower! Lift up your radiant brow, This day, Youth of my native strand! Your abounding talents show Resplendently and grand, Fair hope of my Motherland! Soar high, oh genius great, And with noble thoughts fill their mind; The honor’s glorious seat, May their virgin mind fly and find More rapidly than the wind. The first line, â€Å"unfold, oh timid flower,† implies that the youth is silent, maybe daunted, and consequently has not yet gone into full bloom for whatever reason there is that may have silenced them. In the beginning stanza, Rizal encourages the youth, by telling them to hold their heads high  for they possess talents and skills and abilities that would make their country proud. The second verse can be rearranged in contemporary English to say: â€Å"Oh genius great, soar high; and fill their mind with noble thoughts. May their virgin mind fly and find the honor’s glorious seat more rapidly than the wind.† Here, Rizal calls to genious to fill young minds with noble thoughts and hopes that as they release their thinking from the chains that bind, they may be able to soar swiftly high where the joy of honor is. Descend with the pleasing light Of the arts and sciences to the plain, Oh Youth, and break forthright The links of the heavy chain That your poetic genius enchain. Contrary to the second verse, which talked about ascending and soaring to the heights, this third stanza now talks about descent, and a downward motion of the great genius to fill the earthly strokes of art and science with their magnificent ideas. Again, Rizal calls them to break the chains that bind their intellect. â€Å"Poetic genius† here does not necessarily pertain to the talent of writing poetry. Instead, the term â€Å"poetic† is simply an adjective to describe genius, meaning that it is deep and mystifying and heavy with meaning. See that in the ardent zone, The Spaniard, where shadows stand, Doth offer a shining crown, With wise and merciful hand To the son of this Indian land. Rizal challenges the youth, that in their pursuit of knowledge and wisdom they may humble the hand of Spain, whose proud chin did not look kindly upon the people whom they labelled as â€Å"Indios† and whom they treated with contempt. He dreams that in their journey to intellectual greatness they may  humble even the proudest nations that look down on them and rightfully deserve â€Å"a crown that shines, even where shadows stand.† You, who heavenward rise On wings of your rich fantasy, Seek in the Olympian skies The tenderest poesy, More sweet than divine honey; You of heavenly harmony, On a calm unperturbed night, Philomel’s match in melody, That in varied symphony Dissipate man’s sorrow’s blight; In these two stanzas, Rizal calls the youth to seek the beauty of poetry and music, which he himself values greatly as essentials in every manner of life. He claims that poetry is â€Å"more sweet than divine honey,† and that music can â€Å"dissipate man’s sorrow’s blight.† You at th’ impulse of your mind The hard rock animate And your mind with great pow’r consigned Transformed into immortal state The pure mem’ry of genius great; Speaking to the youth, Rizal says that by the very impulse of their mind, they are capable of bringing to life or animating even someting as lifeless and unmoving as a hard rock. He continues to say that the youth is able, to immortalize their thoughts and their words through the help of great genius (as he has done himself. This stanza can be arranged in a more contemporary English structure as follows: â€Å"You can animate the hard rock at the impulse of your mind; and transform, with the great power of your mind, the pure memory of great genius into immortality.† And you, who with magic brush On canvas plain capture The varied charm of Phoebus, Loved by the divine Apelles, And the mantle of Nature; Rizal here addresses the youth, comparing their abilities to a magic brush that can capture even the most majestic views and the most glorious charms on a blank canvas. Run ! For genius’ sacred flame Awaits the artist’s crowning Spreading far and wide the fame Throughout the sphere proclaiming With trumpet the mortal’s name Oh, joyful, joyful day, The Almighty blessed be Who, with loving eagerness Sends you luck and happiness. The last stanza is a charge, urging the youth to run, for a glorious crown awaits them. The â€Å"sphere† here pertains to the world, showing that Rizal believed the Filipino youth is as brilliant as those in any other nation, and is able to contend with even the strongest powers if they only set their mind to making most of what they already have. Sa Aking mga Kababata Kapagka ang baya’y sadyang umiibig Sa langit salitang kaloob ng langit Sanlang kalayaan nasa ring masapi Katulad ng ibong nasa himpapawid This first stanza in Rizal’s poem shows that long before he sprouted the first fruits of his youth, he had already placed distinguished value in the  importance of one’s mother tongue. According to these verses, if a nation’s people wholeheartedly embrace and love their native language, that nation will also surely pursue liberty. He likens this idea to a bird soaring freely in the vast, eternal sky above. Pagka’t ang salita’y isang kahatulan Sa bayan, sa nayo’t mga kaharian At ang isang tao’y katulad, kabagay Ng alin mang likha noong kalayaan. Language here is likened to a people born into freedom. In Rizal’s time, Filipinos were held in slavery by Spain. Rizal, however, believed that if the people treasured and loved and used their mother tongue, it would become a symbol of relative freedom, and of identity. Ang hindi magmahal sa kanyang salita Mahigit sa hayop at malansang isda Kaya ang marapat pagyamanin kusa Na tulad sa inang tunay na nagpala It is here in these lines of verse that we find Rizal’s famous quote: â€Å"He who does not love his own language is worse than an animal and smelly fish.† He further adds that Filipinos must work to make the language richer, and likens this endeavor to a mother feeding her young. The native tongue is now compared to a helpless child that must be nurtured in order to grow and flourish. Ang salita nati’y tulad din sa iba Na may alfabeto at sariling letra, Na kaya nawala’y dinatnan ng sigwa Ang lunday sa lawa noong dakong una. These last lines may very well be referring to the Alibata, or the old Filipino alphabet whose characters are unique in every essence, finding no likeness in any other alphabet. The Tagalog language, according to Rizal, has letters and characters of its very own, similar to the way other â€Å"elite  tongues† do. These letters, however, were overthrown by strong waves and lost, like fragile, fickle boats in the stormy sea, many long years ago.

The goal is to develop a plan that can decrease the travel time of the regional manager so; that he, Jay Morgan, can save on gas due to high gas prices since each restaurant is located in the northern California area. The objective is to introduce a HRIS application and one vendor that can assist in the developing of the HR department and ease the transitioning of one individual HR manager to multiple employees. There are restaurants with profits in mind and provide the same food and service while the Castle’s Family believes in family, partnerships and developing relationships with one another for a great customer service. Introduction The Castle’s Family Restaurant has eight restaurants in northern California with about 300-340 employees. Most of the employees are part time with about 40% of them full-time. This business plan is to determine strategies that will eliminate the Human Resource position from Jay Morgan, so that he can reduce his travel time to all eight locations and to develop an HR department for the restaurants. In addition, the business plan is to enable Jay Morgan to concentrate on his operation manager duties. The factors that cause many issues to the Castle’s Family restaurant business are having one individual with so many responsibilities. Therefore, hiring an HR manager to schedule, recruit, hire and assist the employees in their needs will help in creating order. In addition, the restaurant must hire an assistant to help in the administration work; it will decrease the amount of  paperwork for the general manager. And each restaurant must have a manager to overseas the employees and the operation of the restaurant. The managers will conduct meetings monthly to provide the sales, revenues and customer services of each restaurant. Managers can communicate through emails, phone calls if they have questions for each other, or have any concerns. A needs assessment must be conducted to determine if an HRIS is needed for the company. In order to have a successful restaurant business every factor must be considered. For example, customer service to the customers is a big factor becau se that is what brings in the revenue. For a restaurant to have a successful business they must have the right food for their customers to enjoy and to assist the customers any way they can. In the last year, there had been some speculation into how the government will help the small restaurants and that the fiscal will prevent any type of savings in when tax time comes around. These HRIS and vendor application that will be stated in this business plan is there to develop and help maintain the restaurant’s H R department and increase growth in the company. We have acquired an HRIS system that will help in developing the HR department to provide easy process for the employees. For example, the payroll application should be implemented to help the restaurant establish tax, earnings, and deduction codes to perform critical payroll functions and to modify the system to the restaurant’s needs. Changing Ethical Perspectives-McDonald’s Essay When Dick and Mac McDonald opened their first barbecue restaurant in 1940, it is doubtful they realized the impact their company name would have upon the world of business and food service. A few years after they opened their restaurant, they closed to renovate, rethink their business strategy, and presented a simple drive-in restaurant with a small menu to allow the brothers to focus not on providing diversity and choices, but quality within their service and products (â€Å"Our History-1940†, n.d.). It may have been the simplicity of the operation, or the high level of dedication to service that attracted the attention of restaurant equipment salesman Ray Croc. In 1954, Ray Croc visited their only establishment in San Bernadino, California and learned they had an interest in building a franchise around their existing business configuration. Ray Croc and the McDonald’s brothers agree on their first franchise plan and set out to build more locations. Kroc opens his first franchise location in Des Plaines, Ill. on April 15, 1955. McDonald’s and the World-An Ethical Perspective Through the nineties and into the 21st century, a new form of consumer was emerging. This new creed of shopping known as ‘ethical consumerism’ focuses in on supporting companies that have a proven track record of healthy and environmentally supportive business practices. Even with menu enhancements and slight menu changes within the different cultural areas McDonald’s had entered, this is an area they had not yet championed (York, 2006). In order to survive, corporate leadership knew they had a very steep challenge to face. In small steps, McDonald’s slowly turned their behemoth juggernaut of food service into becoming more environmentally conscious and ‘green’. They took on challenges from large organizations such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to change their beef and chicken production (Beef magazine, 2005). As the critics emerged, McDonald’s faced charges of unhealthy menu’s and unsound environmental practices. Na2S2O3 (aq)+ 2HCl(aq) 2NaCl(aq)+S(s)+SO2(g) When hydrochloric acid is added to sodium thiosulphate, the chemicals react giving solid sulphur as one of the products. This is a precipitation reaction. By watching the speed at which the sulphur has formed, we can find out the rate of reaction. A cross can be marked on a piece of paper, and a flask of sodium thiosulphate can be placed on top. By adding hydrochloric acid to the sodium thiosulphate, we can time how long it takes for the view of the cross to become obscured by the sulphur. We can then find out the rate of the reaction. What is Rate? Chemical reactions can be seen everywhere, whether an explosion, which is extremely fast, to something very slow, like the rusting of a metal. It is not enough just to know whether something is fast or slow however. Rate is a measure of the change that happens in a single unit of time. For example, if a car travels 40 km in half an hour, it is travelling at 80 km/h. For a chemical reaction to take place, some bonds in the reactants must be broken. The colliding particles must have enough energy to break these bonds. This minimum amount of energy is called the activation energy. Only the very fastest moving particles have enough energy to break bonds. In gases, liquids and in solution, the particles move at a range of speeds. Some are moving very slowly and others are moving very fast. To react, particles must collide with enough energy and in the correct orientation for bonds to be broken. If there is not enough kinetic energy, the particles barely touch, and the reaction does not happen. If the kinetic energy of the particles is just right, they hit each other and form new bonds. For a reaction to take place, the alignment of the molecules must also be correct. If two or more molecules collide, but are not orientated correctly, a reaction cannot take place. Variables Concentration of Thio If the concentration of thio is increased, the rate of reaction is also increased. This is because in dilute acid, there are not many acid particles. This means there is a more remote chance of an acid particle, hitting a sodium thiosulphate particle. In a more concentrated acid, there are more acid particles. There is now more chance of an acid particle colliding with a sodium thiosulphate particle, and so more chance of a collision. I have chosen this variable to use, as it will be possible to get a wide range of results with relative ease. I also feel that there will be a significant enough range of values in the results to make an effective graph. I could change this variable by adding water to the sodium thiosulphate to make it less concentrated. I will need to keep the volume constant throughout the experiment, so I could, for example use 40 cm3 of sodium thiosulphate and 10 cm3 of water, and then 30/20 etc. Temperature At low temperatures, particles of reacting substances do not have much energy. However, when the substances are heated, the particles take in energy. This causes them to move faster and collide more often. The collisions have more energy; so more collisions are successful. Therefore, the rate of reaction increases. This is called the kinetic theory. A reaction goes approximately twice as fast when the temperature is increased by 10 degrees. This is why it is important to keep this variable constant . To do this; I will need to do the experiment on the same day if possible. This ensures that the differences in room temperature, however small, do not affect the rate of reaction. Surface Area In a reaction containing a solid, its surface area has a large effect on the rate of reaction. If the surface area of the solid is small, the acid particles can only collide with the atoms in the outer layer of the solid. But if the solid has a large surface area, much more of the atoms are exposed, so there is a greater chance of one of these atoms colliding with an acid particle, and increasing the rate of reaction. However, in my experiment, I will not be using any solids, so this variable will not affect my experiment. Synthesis of Janus Nanocomposites for Drug Delivery System Over the past few decades, drug delivery systems have been well developed and studied to improve the curative effect of drugs.[1–4] Drug delivery systems can ameliorate the problems of conventional administration by prolonging duration time, enhancing drug solubility, retaining drug bioactivity, reducing side effect, and so on.[5, 6] A variety of carriers such as lipids,7, 8 polymer gels,[9,10] especially nanoparticles,11, 12 have been studied in drug delivery systems. At present, stimuli sensitive drug delivery systems have been an attractive theme for controlled release. The release behaviors of drugs can be easily controlled by surrounding properties, such as temperature,13, 14 pH,15,16 electric field,[17 ionic strength,[18 and so on. Recently, combined therapy with dual-drugs of different therapeutic effects shows excellent performance in treatment of diseases.19, 20 In order to optimize therapeutic effects, the doses and species of drugs should be optimized at different c linical manifestations and periods in the treatment. One of the main challenges of combined therapy is to control the release behavior of each drug independently. However, simple drug delivery systems cannot fulfill the needs of such therapy, because the most widely used carriers are normally possess single symmetrical geometry with single-surface. Even the dual-drugs are loaded on the single-surface carrier at same time, the delivery systems are designed only for the simultaneous release of two different drugs, and the release of each drug cannot be controlled. Furthermore, the multi-conjugates or loadings can interact with each other leading to undesired adverse effects. Janus nanoparticles possess multiple surface structures are anisotropic in composition, shape, and surface chemistry.[21] The structural asymmetry is ideally suited for dual-drug conju gations or loadings on different sections of a single Janus particle.[22] Furthermore, functionally distinct surfaces of the Janus particle can be used to selectively conjugate with specific chemical moieties for controlling the dual-drug loading or releasing, respectively.[23-25] During the past decades, considerable efforts have been made on the fabrication of Janus particles.[26-30] For instance, a monolayer of spherical particles such as those of polystyrene (PS) or silica colloidal nanospheres are spread on a solid substrate.[31-33] Thus, the functionalization could take place only on the top surfaces of the anchored particles. Because the low yield of the Janus particles result from the limited surface area of the bulk substrates, a modified method was later developed by using colloidal particles as the supporting substrates.[34-38] Another method for fabricating Janus particles was carried out at interfaces: a particle partially contacted with reactive medium and generated different surface functionalities from the opposite surface.36 With the development of microfluidic technique, Janus particles could also be fabricated by solidifying droplets composed of immiscible components.[39, 40] Other methods such as controlled surface nucleation, phase separat ion, and controllable polymer attachment,[41-54] have been also developed to synthesize the Janus particles. But the Janus particles reported previously were often close to micrometer in size and typically involved various types of polymers, which could induced poor biocompatibility, the fabrication of small Janus nanoparticles with inorganic materials is still a greater challenge.[48-54] On the other hand, the widely used silica is an useful material for building concentric [emailprotected] structures by using metallic or magnetic nanoparticles or quantum dots as cores,[55-57] but there have been few reports about silica based Janus nanoparticles. Due to the amorphous nature of silica, it is difficult to fine-tune the surface tension or lattice mismatch between silica and these core materials to form the Janus nanostructure. The inorganic nanocrystals may have polymorphic atomic structures that are epitaxially attached at the interface from a core, leading to specific inorganic nanostructures with well-defined and characteristic shapes such as dimmers or trimers .[65, 66] For the growth of the ordered mesoporous structures, it is partly analogous to the growth of inorganic nanocrystals. Rather than epitaxy from atomic structures, the mesostructures can also be oriented by surfactants micelle and further induced the epitaxy growth of the mesoporous silica. So, compared with the formation of the inorganic nanocrystals Janus nanostructures, the silica based Janus nanocomposites would also be fabricated under the direction of the epitaxially growing properties of the mesoporous silica. Project proposal Focusing on the issues faced by the synthesis of the silica-based Janus nanocomposites and corresponding applications, this proposed project concerns the development of a novel anisotropic growth induced route for the synthesis of Janus core-shell mesoporous silica nanocomposites [[emailprotected]2@mSiO2-PMO (NCs = Functional nanocrystals; mSiO2= mesoporous silica; PMO= periodic mesoporous organosilicas)] by using the mesoporous silica as a structural subunit, and the obtained Janus nanocomposites can be used for dual-control drug release (ibuprofen and doxorubicin). As shown in Scheme 1, inorganic functional nanocrystals, including upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4) and quantum dots (QDs), are firstly synthesized by using solvothermal approaches at a high temperature. Then, the [emailprotected]2 [emailprotected] nanoparticles, including [emailprotected]2, Fe3O4@SiO2, [emailprotected]2, will be synthesized with the reverse micro-emulsion method. Duo to the hydrophobic surface property of the obtained NCs, this hydrophilic SiO2 layer is very necessary for the following syntheses and applications. Finally, the Janus core-shell mesoporous silica nanocomposites of [emailprotected]2@mSiO2-PMO can be fabricated through a surfactant-templating approach by using cationic surfactant CTAB as a structure-directing agent and organic silica precursor as a source. At the very beginning, mesostructured CTAC/PMO composites can be assembled and deposited on the [emailprotected]2@mSiO2 nanoparticles surfaces. Then, through an anisotropic growth, the mesostructured shells finally develop into mesoscale single-crystals coated on the spherical [emailprotected]2@mSiO2 cores and form Janus nanocomposites. The mesoporous of PMO section of Janus nanocomposites can also accommodate the guest drug molecules (ibuprofen). By introducing the heat sensitive pha se-change material (1-tetradecanol) as switch molecules, it will realize the dual-control release of the guest species. Two kinds of switch molecules are design to realize dual-control release of the drug molecules independently for the first time. Task 1: Synthesis of the inorganic functional nanocrystals (NCs), including upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4), quantum dots (QDs), and so on. The necessary characterization (i.e. SEM and TEM) will be used in the experiments. Task 3: Fabrication of the [emailprotected]2@mSiO2 [emailprotected]@shell nanoparticles. In this step, the radial mesoporous SiO2 will be synthesized with the Stà ¶ber method in the presence of cationic surfactant such as CTAB. TEOS is used as a silica sources and hydrolysis in ethanol/water solution under alkaline condition (NH3.H2O) at room temperature. The necessary characterization (i.e. BET, SEM, and TEM) will be used in the experiments. Task 4: Fabrication of the Janus core-shell mesoporous silica nanocomposites ([emailprotected]2@mSiO2-PMO). The orientation growth of the cubic mesostructure of mesoporous organosilica (PMO) materials is the key factor for the formation of the silica-based Janus nanocomposites. Goodman Brown, from "Young Goodman Brown" and Hooper, from "The Minister's Black Veil" are two characters that suffer from a pride of intellect. Their pride causes them similar problems and they end up living similar lives, although they came from different backgrounds. Hooper and Goodman Brown both become isolated from society. Hooper had a revelation, and he feels that he truly understands human nature and sin. However, he believes that he is above everybody else because he has this understanding. This is what causes the major separation between Hooper and society. After Hooper dawns the veil he can no longer function or act as a normal person, because of this feeling of superiority. His perception of an ultimate human isolation leaves him the man most isolated in what Hawthorne describes as that saddest of all prisons, his own heart . . . "(The Minister's Black Veil,228). The veil affects all parts of his life, his fiance leaves him and he can no longer relate to his congregation the same way. Oman is a small country located in the northeast by the gulf of Oman and southeast by the Arabian Sea, southeast by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The capitol of this country is Muscat. Oman covers an area of about 119,500 sq mi. Oman borders Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and the United Arab Emirates. The Oman government, from what I have read, is ran by a sultan and seems to be somewhat democratic. The population is overwhelmingly Arab, but significant minorities of Indians, Pakistanis, and East Africans are found in the principal ports. The majority of the population is Ibadhi Muslim; Sunni Muslims form the other major religious group. Arabic is the official language. The Life expectancy on average, is 70.25 years, however females seem to live longer; males: 68.31 years female: 72.29 years (1995 est.). There are about 6 children born to each woman. That just shows how much they value family as well as procreation in itself. The Languages are Arabic (official), English, Baluchi, Urdu, and Indian dialects. (1) One of the most interesting pieces I came across about Oman is how the women are treated. Usually when you think of Middle East women you assume they are oppressed or considered to be uneducated. However the women of Oman play a more active and visible role in society than in most of the Arabian Peninsula, where the role of women is still restricted. They have received encouragement and support from the government, which provides schooling and university education for girls on a par with that for boys, and has decreed that women should be given career opportunities and equal pay. In the capital many women now have jobs, especially with the government. In the countryside women have always played an active role in the agricultural communities. For the most part Oman women are not veiled, although the women of some tribes still wear the burqa or facemask and black cloak, the abaya. After viewing many pictures of the women of this culture the majority of Oman women, however, wear very colorful clothes arranged in loose and flowing layers. They are generally not self-effacing and may be willing to talk to strangers, once the ice has been broken. But they are deeply Muslim and should always be treated with deference and respect. Overall Oman is a very interesting country. They are progressing more into the future and at the same time not leaving their heritage or culture behind, but instead modernizing it. The sultan of this country has been in reign for over 30 years and has done nothing but allowed his country to progress. The fact that this is one of the few Arabic countries that actually allows women certain rights will hopefully educate other Arabic countries about equalization or steps towards allowing women to be freer.
